Model Tips
Q. Do I need an Agent to become a Model or to Act? A. No, but we wouldn’t recommend it. While there are those out there that can find their own assignments it is rare that they receive the pay they deserve for the assignment. An Agents job is not to find you work, but to negotiate your contract. They are specially trained to get you the most income available.
Q. Can an Agency promise me assignments? A. No! As of right now there is only one Agency in the world that can legally make any promise of assignments, and the only reason they can do this is that they create their own assignments which pay above the industry average.
Q. Do I need a Professional Portfolio? A. Not really, but your portfolio is your resume’. If it looks like amateur work then you will be seen as an amateur.
Q. Should I pay for Modeling or Acting classes? A. If you’re asking about Modeling Schools then the answer is NO. On the other hand Acting classes are recommended but only if taken at an accredited university or college. You will usually end up paying less, and get a better education. Agents do look at how you spend your money, and if they see that you have completed college level courses then you will be more likely to be marketable.
Q. Can I take someone with me on a shoot? A. If it’s just a Portfolio shoot or you do not know the Photographer then I recommend it. If a Photographer doesn’t allow you to take anyone with you, then you should always question why. For paid assignments it is a good idea to make sure that someone is there to watch out for you. You don’t want to take your friends to work with you, but if there are not other Models on site, then your Agent should ensure that someone is there to look out for your best interests and safety.
Q. A local Agency wants me to sign an exclusive contract. Should I sign it? A. A local Agency legally can’t hold you in an exclusive contract. Their training, licensing and level of representation is too limiting toward your career. As well, and International Agency should have enough Agents on staff to be able to handle your career and always be available to you.
Q. How tall do I have to be? A. Height is a major requirement for most Agencies, but it is because they are looking for a specific type of Modeling. They focus on their specialty in the industry. Ford is looking for Models that have a great swim wear body. Willimena is looking for tall Models with no figure because they focus on high fashion. You should always check with the Agency and look at their current roster of Models to determine if you will fit with their style. They are looking at what their customers are looking for, based on the fashions available by that customer.
